You always remember your first one. Isn’t that the saying? Yes, I remember my first X-men comic, and I still have it even though it is in terrible condition. When I was 11, my family and I went to visit extended family in Oakland, CA. I had been introduced to the X-men via The Animated Series cartoon and was hooked! While waiting in the airport, I bought X-men #23, and my life changed that day. Of course, I had absolutely no idea what was going in within the comic, but I became obsessed! A few weeks later, I asked my mom to take me to a comic store, and I managed to spend over $50 (my life savings at the time) on back issues on my favorite mutants, The X-men! To this day, my favorite job I ever worked was as a clerk at a comic book / video rental store in college. It changed my life in so many ways, and I am so grateful that I had those experiences! Anyway, I have always had a mad obsession with the X-men (Jean Grey in particular), and I have been cross stitching pattens of these mutants for many years. It was very difficult to pick the characters I wanted because I truly love them all! My geeky claim-to-fame was getting a letter published in X-men #33 about the wedding of Jean Grey and Cyclops, and the letter still makes me smile. I was commenting on how I loved the fact the X-men had so many female characters. For a half-Asian, blonde girl growing up in the Midwest who loved playing with boys and reading comic books, this comic gave me so much insight on the struggles of different kinds of people. Many of us don’t know where we fit at a certain time in our lives (and some struggle with this fact throughout their life), so X-men was there for me when I needed it!
Anyway, when I created my X-men Alphabet Sampler pattern, I knew I wanted a close male to female ratio. Let’s be real, most of the best characters are women! I think it is funny that there are actually more women on this pattern than men, but that is ok with me! Other fun facts? One character is on the pattern twice, and we have one married couple (well, they were technically married before she died in the comics), a mother and son, and countless other crazy relations!
Here are the characters:
Armor, Blink, Cyclops, Dazzler, Emma Frost, Fantomex, Gambit, Havok, Iceman, Jean Grey, Kitty Pryde, Lilandra, Mystique, Nightcrawler, Onslaught, Psylocke, Quicksilver, Rogue, Storm, Thunderbird, Unuscione, Viper, Wolverine, Professor X, Yukio, and Zaladane!
I hope you love this pattern as much as I do!!! I’m working on it right now for my X-men room! (Yes, I have an X-men room)
